May 2012 Solar Eclipse in Gemini – Prelude to a summer of tension & social change.

solar eclipse

It’s time for another solar eclipse this month as the Sun & Moon collide in the skies over the 20th/21st May (depending where you are in the world) in Gemini. The last couple of solar eclipses precipitated some really differing events – the July 1st 11 one in Cancer which featured a hugely stressful cardinal cross brought violence in the UK and Norway and was especially involved in the unravelling of the phone hacking scandal associated with Rupert Murdoch which spread like wildfire around the world. The November 25th eclipse in Sagittarius hit in the middle of a European Union debt crisis with Greece on the edge of default. It also saw the passing of two vastly differing world leaders, Vaclav Havel and Kim Jong Il of North Korea. So what will this one bring? Let have a look and try and unravel some meaning from the day of this eclipse.

Adam Yauch – A victim of cancer at just 47 years of age

Adam Yauch

If you are around my age in your middle to late 30-40’s then surely you were at some point in your life influenced by the sheer verve and visceral energy of the Beastie Boys. This was the music of the street and of downtown New York, loud proud and in your face. Adam Yauch known in the group as MCA was one of those lads, the other two Mike Diamond & John Berry (from 1982 Adam Horowitz) who sold 40 million albums, were the first hip hop group to smash through to wow mainstream audiences, whilst continuing to upset nearly everyone around them. Rebels they were, and yet hits such as “Intergalactic” & “Fight for your Right” are still as popular today as they were years ago. Adam today succumbed to cancer at the tender age of just 47.

Chen Guangcheng – A thorn in the side of the Chinese leadership

Chen Guangcheng

Chen Guangcheng has recently become a focal point for those who complain about the authoritarian line taken by the Chinese rulership. Developing almost total blindness after birth, he still was able to study law and represented the poor in his home province, especially fighting against the one child per couple rule. As a result of going against party policy, he was arrested and put in jail for 4 years and after being released in 2010 was confined to house arrest in Dongshigu Village where he grew up. After a video last year of his wife and himself being beaten up was received by Amnesty International, his case was taken up by the British Foreign office and US State department. Somehow he escaped from custody and fled to the US Embassy in Beijing, however he was injured in the attempt and a deal seems to have been reached for him to receive medical attention. Latest news states that the Chinese have threatened his beat his wife and child prompting him to come out into the open, and in the process raising the diplomatic tensions between the US and China.
