The Netherlands - Beware the Ides of March

Geert Wilders

On 15th March, the people of the Netherlands go to the polls to elect a new leader. This is the first of several critical general elections in Europe this year that will determine the political direction that the continent is moving in.

The 15th March is a date steeped in ancient European history, the day in the year 44BC when Julius Caesar was stabbed to death by Brutus. Caesar had been advised by a "seer" that the Ides of March (15th of the month) were a dangerous time for him. On his way to the Theatre of Pompey where he would be assassinated, Caesar passed the seer and said, "The Ides of March are come", implying that the prophecy had not been fulfilled, to which the seer replied "Aye, Caesar; but not gone." Thus the direction of the Roman Empire turned on a sixpence, and a decline began.

Now we move forward to the year 2017. The European Union, the empire of our day on this continent is under threat. Britain has already voted to leave in the Brexit vote last year and now we come to a series of votes that could have lasting repercussions on the fate of the European Union, starting in Holland.

Now the candidate in Holland currently at the top of the opinion polls is one Geert Wilders, the leader of the PVV, "Partij voor de Vrijheid" or the "Freedom Party". This guy is staunch anti-Muslim and ultra right wing conservative, and one of his stated aims if he is elected leader is to close down mosques in the Netherlands, close Muslim schools, ban the Qur'an and ban the entry of Muslim migrants. In cosmopolitan Holland that is a manifesto bound to sir up hatred and divide the nation. He is a one man band, he is the party and he looks scary too!! There are lots of parties in this election and with 76 seats needed to win, no one party will end up with an overall majority, so the Netherlands government is always going to be a coalition. The thing is that none of the other candidates will want to cooperate with Wilders if he gets the largest vote. Currently, Wilders and this PVV are polling neck a neck to the next nearest challenger, the current Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the VVD party, both predicted to win around 25 seats, so you can gauge the way things are going.

You can also see this through the Dutch natal chart too, set for 16th March 1815 at 10.30 am in The Hague, the chart used by most Dutch Astrologers. Conservative Saturn on 15th March is going to be square to the Sun Pluto conjunction on the Dutch chart, the Sun representing the leader and Pluto power and control. You'll notice that (obviously) the transiting Sun is conjunct to the natal Sun as is transiting Chiron, a wound. Is the Netherlands going to wound itself on this day, self-inflicted pain and hurt? There is pain and loss from this Saturn Chiron square, emanating from the 6th house of the ordinary people, the workers and those who graft day in and day out. Transiting Saturn also makes a sextile into the MC of the chart, saying that there is an opportunity for a conservative to sieze power.

The other aspect that grabs me is Pluto in conjunction to the Dutch natal Mars in the 7th house of relations with other nations. Pluto is a change or a transformation, often brutal and uncompromising. Mars is positivity, force, action and aggression and this conjunction says to me that relations with those who oppose the direction that Holland is going will worsen and intensify. There is powerful opposition here to the decision being made, and appropriately Mercury opposes the natal Dutch Mercury ruling the 10th house of the administration of the nation and the 8th house of change. Going back to Mars, it also rules the 11th house of parties and groups, and so there will be a battle for power here that could get quite messy and manipulative as the leaders jostle for influence and control.

As for Wilders himself, I do have a date of birth 6th September 1963 in Venlo, Netherlands, so he is a Sun Virgo with an outspoken forward looking Aries Moon, so on the inside he may be careful and timid, but he covers this with emotional bravado. There are two other things on his chart that interest me. He has a Sun Pluto conjunction in Virgo, so here is a need for power and he will attract devotional support and opposition in equal measures. The natal Dutch chart has exactly this aspect, Pluto conjunct to the Sun in Pisces, in an opposite sign. Is he a reflection of the natural tendencies of the Dutch? That Sun Pluto conjunction of Wilders opposed the Dutch natal Chiron, so he may be the cause of a deep wound within the Dutch psyche.

Wilders vs dutch chart

Transiting Pluto is now sitting bang on his South Node. This is a transforming influence and he will have to suddenly adjust to a new situation, often accompanied with a power struggle. This conjunction is interesting as it means that Wilders' South Node sits right on top of that natal Dutch Mars. He will be the instigator in chief of the opposition and anger that will be dredged up within and outside of the country.

One thing is for sure, he is and will be divisive and even if he doesn't assume power in Holland, his influence will hang like a dagger over the future his nation, and of the European Union. If the people speak to support his "racist" views, can you imagine the fall out from it? As was said on the continent before, "Beware the Ides of March!!".
